HEARING THE VOICE

"When Moses went into the tent of meeting, to speak with Him, he would hear the Voice speaking to him from above the covering that was on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim; and He would speak to him."  Numbers 7:89

Moses had direct two-way conversations with God. They spoke "panim al panim" - face to face. For good or ill, none of us is blessed in quite the same way that Moses was. But, we are told in the Torah that our ancestors standing at the foot of Mount Sinai heard the Voice as well, in the giving of the Torah (matanat torah), which we celebrated earlier this week on the Festival of Shavuot. And Moses told our ancestors that God's covenant with the Jewish people was eternal - not only with those present, but with all those to come in the future.

On Shavuot, we re-enacted that moment of the giving of the Torah. It could as easily and properly be called "kabbalat torah" - the receiving of the Torah. Regardless, the truth is that we have the opportunity always to receive the Torah, to hear the Voice, if we would only open our eyes and ears to the Word. We can do this during the public reading of the Torah, in group study sessions, in chevruta (with a study partner), in lectures - you get the idea.

You can of course receive Torah, i.e., learn, the old-fashioned way, by attending services or adult learning programs at your synagogue. One of the great wonders of our age is the Internet; you can obtain excellent Torah learning, at your convenience, at any time, from innumerable on-line sources. Hillel teaches: “Do not say, ‘When I have leisure, I will study,’ for you may never have leisure.” What he’s really saying is, “Stop making excuses! Learn what you've been missing!”

Shabbat Shalom!

THE MOSAIC

“Every man with his own standard, with ensigns according to their fathers’ houses, so shall the Children of Israel pitch the camp; at a distance from the tent of meeting shall they encamp.” Numbers 2:2

One should not for a moment believe that this verse is a license for each of us to go our individual ways. We are indeed to maintain our individual identities, but only within the context of the larger community.

The commentary Bet Aharon makes this point in an interesting way. “Every Jew must know and think that he is unique in the world, and there has never been another person exactly like him. If there had been someone just like him, there would have been no need for him. In truth, every person is someone new in the world, who needs to improve his character and his Torah for the sake of his soul, until the entire world has been repaired through the effort of the Jewish people.”

It’s a pretty tall order. Look at it this way. Each of us is a mosaic "work-in-progress", made of many tiles (nature, nurture, experience, education, relationships, etc.) that needs to be completed and put back together; each of us is a tile in a much vaster communal/societal mosaic that each of us has a responsibility for assembling. When we put together the pieces of our own lives and our own souls, and place the tiles of our own selves into the mosaic of the community, we are contributing to the improvement of the world as well.

It all starts with you.

Have a wonderful Shabbat! Chag Shavuot Sameach! See you at Mount Sinai!

WHO FREES THE SLAVES?

WHO FREES THE SLAVES?

"For the Children of Israel are servants (or, slaves) to Me, they are My servants, whom I have taken out of the land of Egypt - I am the Lord your God. You shall not make idols for yourselves, and you shall not erect for yourselves a statue or a pillar, and in your land you shall not emplace a flooring stone upon which to prostrate oneself - for I am the Lord your God." Lev. 25:55-26:1

In the verses preceding our quote, the Israelites are told that they may not sell themselves into slavery to idol worshippers - should any Israelite do so, his/her family are required to redeem the slave (25:48-9). We are servants of God, and may not be slaves of other humans.

You might think that these verses are irrelevant today - nobody sells themselves into slavery to idol worshippers, nobody erects idols, statues or pillars to worship, etc. - humanity has gone beyond all that. Or has it? Actually, people sell themselves into slavery all of the time.  Think of alcohol, drugs (including tobacco), gambling, and prostitution - all forms of enslavement. The people who run these businesses, whether legal or not, are the slave masters. The customers and the employees are the slaves. The idolatrous vice is the form of coercion used to enforce the slavery, through addiction.

Why should we care? Aren't addicts responsible for putting themselves into this position? Why are we responsible for redeeming them? Because it would be unjust not to do so.

R. Yitzchak Breuer, quoted by R. Yehudah Nachshoni, says: "If, through animalistic desires one man is made the slave of another, it is nothing less than a tremendous desecration of the honor and glory of mankind, for all have but one Father. There is no greater injustice than 'human justice' which recognizes slavery." If this applies to forms of addiction, how much the more so are we obligated in cases of actual slavery and human trafficking!

We are all responsible for freeing people from any type of slavery. That is the way to give meaning to another verse from this parashah, found on the Liberty Bell: "Proclaim freedom throughout the land for all its inhabitants." (25:10) It’s a tough job, but someone's got to do it, and that someone is you and I.

Have a wonderful Shabbat!  It's our weekly Liberation Day!

UNCLE SAM WANTS.... YOUR EXTRA FOOD!

"When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not completely reap all the way to the corners of your field, and you shall not gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger; I am the Lord your God." Leviticus 23:22

In the Book of Ruth, which we read in a few weeks on the festival of Shavuot, we see this commandment in action. Ruth follows the harvesters in the field of Boaz, and gathers food for herself and her mother-in-law, Naomi. The requirement that the corners and gleanings be left for the poor to collect, rather than simply given to them, is important; it gives them the dignity of gathering it, and thereby providing for themselves. It also demonstrates that the food is not really the farmer's to give away. "For the land is Mine," says God, "for you are sojourners and residents with Me." (Lev. 25:23) God created it; God owns it; we are only workers in the vineyard. And since that is the case, we should take seriously God's commandment to share with those who are less fortunate than we are.

Well, few of us are farmers today, but we reap God's bounty every time we go to the market, every time we open the refrigerator. And if we are not prepared to let strangers go picking through our pantries, we can at least give food to them, or to people who know how to distribute food to those who are hungry.

This Saturday, mail carriers throughout the United States will be "stamping out hunger", collecting cans, bags and boxes of non-perishable groceries. The food will be distributed to local food banks and soup kitchens. This is a no-brainer. All you have to do is leave groceries by your mailbox and the carrier will take it when s/he delivers your mail. One item or fifty, it will all help alleviate some people's hunger for a time.

But there are poor and needy people, who are hungry at other times of the year, not just when we run annual food drives. So at home, or at the synagogue, or at school, set up a box, and put some food items in it once in a while. Encourage your friends and family to do the same. And when it's full, take it over to the nearest community food bank or soup kitchen, and give people the corners and the gleanings of your field. Here at Beth Meier we have a box that is constantly filled and delivered to SOVA, which is also a beneficiary of the Postal Service drive. We learned in last week’s parashah, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Lev. 19:18) When you perform the dual mitzvot of “peah” (corner) and “leket” (gleaning), you fulfill the mitzvah of love as well, for then your neighbor can do as you do: eat and be satisfied (Deuteronomy 11:15).

Have a Blessed Shabbat!
