SERVICE OF THE HEART

"Take from among you gifts to the Lord; everyone whose heart so moves him shall bring them ... Every man and woman whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded to be done, through Moses; the Israelites brought free will offerings to the Lord." Exodus 35:5; 35:29

The free-will gifts mentioned here relate to the construction of the tabernacle and the ritual objects and vestments utilized by the Israelite priests. With no more Temple in Jerusalem, we have found different ways to make holy gifts, in the form of tzedakah (charity) and gemilut chasadim (deeds of lovingkindness). Specifically for Purim, we have Mishlo’ach Manot (sending gifts of food) and Matanot L’evyonim (gifts of food or money to the poor). For Pesach we have Ma’ot Chittim (tzedakah specifically so the poor can observe the festival). Although these are mitzvot, acts which are commanded, just like the half-shekel donation, we must admit that we give more and we do more when our hearts are moved to do so.

We have been told by our Rabbis that the Temple was destroyed because of sin'at chinam, senseless hatred, and that we will be redeemed through ahavat chinam, senseless love of our fellow human beings.

Observance of the mitzvot may be seen as a form of worship – just as our prayer services are. Perhaps our path to redemption, for ourselves, for our communities, and for our world, is for our hearts to be constantly moved with love of these mitzvot and of those who benefit from them, so that we continually engage in Avodat HaLev - the service of the heart

Our society is engaged in a struggle between love and hate, between caring for each other and treating people like they were disposable. God promises us through Ezekiel (36:21),"I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit into you; I will remove the heart of stone from your body and give you a heart of flesh."

Don’t wait for God’s heart transplant! Don't wait until your heart moves you! Move your heart!

Shabbat Shalom!

SOMETHING OF VALUE

“And the people broke off the golden earrings that were in their ears - and brought them to Aaron.” Exodus 32:3

“And the Lord repented of the evil that He had thought to do to His people.” 32:14

Rabbi Eizel of Slonim on verse 3: “Truly this was a great sin committed by Israel in making the golden calf. For all that, we must admit that that generation was better than our own. The members of that generation were willing to cast away their silver and gold in order to make gods for themselves; but today, in our great iniquity, we think it permissible to cast away God solely for wealth and happiness.”

Rabbi Menachem Mendel of Kotzk on verse 14: “Why did He forgive the sin of the golden calf even though the people did not repent, while He did not forgive the sin of the spies even though the people did repent? The sin of the calf had at least a spark of holiness, a thirst for the Divine. But the sin of the spies was all about a better material life.”

These are fascinating comments. Our teachers boldly imply that even mistaken worship of false gods is better than denying divinity altogether. It is not that money and happiness are innately sinful. Certainly not true happiness! Greed and narcissism are the true enemies of holiness. The evil arises from giving up on any sense of Godliness in order to pursue only worldliness.

DON’T LET THE LIGHT GO OUT!

"And you will command the Israelites to take to you clear oil of beaten olives for lighting, to give off light continually." Exodus 27:20

Jewish law requires that a symbolic Ner Tamid, a continuous lamp, also known as the Eternal Light, be found in every synagogue. Interestingly, this is the only mitzvah associated with the Tabernacle that is still observed today. (Rabbi Harold Kushner, in “Humash Etz Hayyim”) Why do we still observe this commandment, in altered form, today?

The Talmud says that the Ner Tamid of the Tabernacle and Temple is symbolic of the Shekhinah, God's Divine Presence. The Midrash adds that the Ner Tamid symbolizes the spiritual light that emanated from the Temple. Rabbi Kushner suggests that light, a favorite symbol for God, cannot be seen - we are aware of it only when we are able to see other things. For all these reasons, we sense God's presence in the world when we see the wonders of creation. Thus, the Ner Tamid is a reminder of what was, what is, and what will be.

It also reminds us that God is always with us, giving off light, even if we are unable to detect the source of the light. We find that light in the synagogue, more than any other place, because that is most often where we seek to draw close to God. It is where we pray and study together, where we hear the reading of the Torah, where we celebrate occasions both joyful and mournful. And if that is so, then the commandment to keep the lamp burning continually takes on added significance - the lamp must have a place where it can be lit! There must be a synagogue, built up and supported by the entire community, in order for the lamp to exist. Please, take an active role in your synagogue! Attend services, Torah study, and other programs; serve on the board or committees; bring your friends and family. Don't let the light go out!

Shabbat Shalom!

GIVE AND TAKE

GIVE AND TAKE

"The Lord spoke to Moses, saying: 'Speak to the Israelites, let them bring Me an offering; from every person, whose heart so moves him, you will take My offering.'" Exodus 25:1-2

The Hebrew word traditionally translated as "bring" really means "take".  Clearly, God does not want the Israelites to take an offering - God wants them to give free-will offerings in order to build the Tabernacle. Reading literally, the commentary "Oznayim L'Torah" then asks, "Why doesn't the Torah state, 'They will give Me'?"

The author suggests that this is a hint at the difficulty involved in raising money for worthy causes. The problem may not be in finding those who are willing to give, but a failure to find people who are willing to "take", who will do the work of raising the money.

We are asked all the time to give money to causes, some worthwhile, some not. Yet many a deserving institution has failed because an insufficient number of people were willing to do the fundraising. Says Oznayim L'Torah, "Therefore the Torah commanded, 'Let them take' - that people should be willing to work to raise money for worthy causes." Similarly, many people are willing to participate in a variety of programs offered by their institutions, but few are willing to “take” the time to work on planning such programs.

Look at your synagogue, or some other cause for which you profess support. If you can give money or time for its activities, then give. If you are able to work to get others to give, then take. Let your heart move you to do God's work. "And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them."  Exodus 25:8.

Think upon this as we prepare for our congregation’s membership meeting this Sunday. Some may give, some may take. But all are needed to build our sacred community.

Have a wonderful Shabbat of happiness - it's Adar!
